I usually just change the brightness, contrast, sharpness and saturation but it depends on what shot it is and how good it is anyhow.

yeh after a awhile you'll see what needs what and when and how much, but the basic adjustments to make it 'ping', are (remebr don't use all of them otherwise it'll look overdone):

unsharp mask or smart sharpen
levels
curves (v. useful, ask if you dunno how to use it properly)
contrast
saturation
(photo filter maybe)

If you are just starting to learn, you definitely do not need to worry about upgrading from Photoshop 7 to CS (sometimes called Cool or CS2 (sometimes called 9). The features that photoshop contains are far more than you are going to use right now, so take the time to work with it. There is a new version coming out soon, they are rushing to get it out. The only reason for that is that no version on Photoshop runs on the new Intel based Macs.

Pick up a copy of the book Adobe Photoshop CS2 for Photographers. (I also have the 7.0 version book) A lot of books cater to the graphic designer over the working photographer, and many of them are at the "Dummies" level, which you will outgrow quickly. This one is a good reference and it comes with a DVD as well.

Learn Levels and Unsharp Mask, but don't overdo it unless you want it to look extreme. Color adjustments are good to start with as well.
