Ok, i might, potentially, be goign to Barbados in december. (N.B. i'm not paying - couldn't afford it!) I currently have:

1x Nikon d50
1x 18-55mm lens
1x 70-300mm lens
1x battery
2x 1gb memory cards
1x camera bag

What would you recommend I add to my list?

I've been thinking about maybe getting a wide angle lens - myabe a 10-20mm (although 18mm is resonably wide), or a polariser filter, definitely a second battery.

Bear in mind i'm on a tight budget. Any help and advice much appreciated!

A polarising filter, a spare battery and more memory cards should be well up on your list as well as a SB-600 flashlight. A good sturdy, light tripod and remote release would be a plan too if there's cash left over. A really wide lens could be useful but you'd have bought one before the 70-300 if you were a natural wide angle freak. 18mm might do fine.

I already have a monopod (which i go free with the bag) but i suppose a tripod would be a good idea. As for polarizing filters, i remember sam_g's thread where you mentioned getting a larger one to fit pro lenses. However, i won't be upgrading to any 'pro' lenses for a good while yet so could you recommend any for the d50? Would that hoya one sam_g mentioned fit?

Cheers for the advice!

That Hoya one would indeed fit, but you would need to use adapter rings to step up the kit lens filter thread from 52mm to 72mm.  If using the kit lens it may just be easier to get a 52mm one, that said, few lenses use a size as small as 52mm (your sigma uses 58 for example), so look at any lenses you are thinking about in the future and use that to help your decision.  As for wide angles, I am looking at a Sigma 10-20 or Tokina 12-24, but I would upgrade the kit lens before buying on.  I use a Sigma 17-70, but also look at the Nikkor 18-70, Tamron 17-50 and Sigma 17-50.

Cheers sam - the sigma 10-20mm has a 77mm filter thread so that would require an even bigger polarizer? However it is unlikely that i will get the 10-20 before i go so maybe i should just get one  that fits straight on the standard lens. d'you reckon i would use a polarizer on the 70-300?

It's a holiday, but i want to make the best of the photo oppurtunities that crop up.

Hamish, as for the sb-600 do you think i would need it over there? (obviously it would be great for biking shots back at home though!)

Why waste money by getting a wee polariser which will only fit one of your lenses when you can get a big one and cheap step down rings to fit them all.

As for the SB-600... well it would be useful for all manner of stuff like fill, shots with the 70-300 where the lens would occlude a lot of it, interior shots using the wide panel, bounced portraits, nice subject light with sunset background shots, etc. As to whether you need it now.. well that depends on what sort of photos you'll mainly be taking.

What do you think of non-official batteries like this one:

Are there any flaws? Also do you think the polariser i posted above is worth it?
