Hi i am looking to buy a replacment lens for my crapy 18-55( for sale haha) i am thinking of getting the nikon 18-70 lens that comes with d70s
could you please tell me how you found them, sharpness , reliability ,focusing and if pos post up a pic with one with out any photoshop on them. thanks a lot jacob

18-70 is a decent lens but has one problem for biking pictures - it's a variable aperture 3.5 - 4.5 and doesn't perform at its best when wide open. It's a good performer when there's plenty of light though.
You might be better to look at either the sigma 18-50 f2.8 or tamron 17-50 f2.8 - I own the tamron and am very impressed by it. It seems to do okay even without AF-S although I haven't tried REALLY fast moving riders yet but it's much sharper and copes with CA much better then the 18-70.
Here is an example from each. They have had minimal PP done in Capture NX. I always run a batch setting to boost some of the colour saturation and sharpen in PP but they haven't had anything other than that.
18-70 with minimal PP
Tamron 17-50 DX with minimal PP
There's a little motion blur in this one as I didn't expect the guy to try and X up or I'd have upped the shutter speed. You can see the white stripes on the jumper are free from CA though. _________________ Hamish |
