i knwo I'm being quite general here, but was thinking of looking into a new lense soon (pun not intended) probably a prime, so was just hoping for a list of things i should avoid and things I would want in a lense ie glass components etc (not really understanding that atm) i keep hearing the nikon 50mm 1.8d is a bargain but it looks like its a lense for film cameras though, bit confused

It is a good lens and will fit onto any Nikon SLR (digital or film). It won't autofocus on the D40 or D40X.

I think the 50 1.8 is always a good lens to have. It's cheap, light, small, fast and very sharp.

Only problem with the 50 1.8 is that it's a slow focussing lens with subjects approaching the camera head on. Other than that, it's the best value for money lens that Nikon do. Great for portraits.

Yer 50 1.8 is awesome Smile Only think i will say though is i know you at the minute have the nikon 18-55mm kit lense and if it wasn't for my film camera i doubt the 50mm would have got much use. It just isn't really a focal length i use alot, i tend to stick at 18-35ish. When the opportunity does arise to use it though it's a dream to use and i love having the ability to use f1.8. I think i might start only taking the 50mm out for a bit to force me to try different stuff as shooting at the same parks week in week out causes the same kind of photos week in week out.

So yer, i would reccomend it but think about other options first. That could be £80 more towards a 10.5 or you could think about selling your 18-55 and getting a better quality, faster lense in that same range.

Good point. The money could be put towards something else and the 18-55 isn't a good lense for biking pics/portraits. I highly recommend the Tamron 17-50 f2.8. It's really sharp and much cheaper & lighter than the Nikon alternative. Although it doesn't have AF-S equivalent it still focusses quickly enough for action and has a decent range.

There's also the sigma 18-50 2.8 HSM - the earlier models were bad for CA but the newer ones are supposed to be better.

You should be able to pick either of them up for about £300 or so brand new. They're definitely worth looking at.
