Thanks for the votes Smile Although i dont really understand why Hamish's photos (3 and 7) havent had more votes- i sense a bias against XC content Sad

I like 2 aswell

LOL.

Allegations of an anti-XC jeyboy bias?? Surely not?

It's possibly true as I've had coments for previous POTW such as "I could't vote for someone with an XC helmet" Wink

I'm surprised your other pic hasn't got more votes, max, as I think it's better than the sunset one.

And no 2 has my vote, it's a great capture.

Haha, yer i agree about no 2. Is a really nice shot.

I want to shoot the sunset photo again really, had no tripod etc. And i prefered some of the other riding pics i put in to the abubica one i think. I couldnt decide at all though Sad

Ok.. i really like shot 10 BUT (and this is me being anal) the DOF is out.

the lower part of the rider silhouette (near the wheel and forks) is blured (as you said you wished you had a tripod..) that would have made it a truly great shot IMO.

With a great DOF and a tripod... WOW... it would have been so much shaper.. Great shot all the same though..

thanks for the comments about mine.. was there for over 6 hours to get the shot...

I wonder if it's camera shake rather than specifically a DOF problem as all the silhouette looks blurry to me. Either that or did rad2themax focus specifically on the background and not the rider as the background looks more in focus? Surely not? That would be an unforgiveable faux pas.

I think it's a gorgeous sunset which is almost spoiled by a rather bland, cliched piece of composition, never mind the blur. There's no sense of scale or perspective and it looks like it could have been staged in someone's back garden or a car park, rather than reflect anything to do with MTBing. I think if the annoying bush to right was absent then we could see what was beyond the rider. That would help things a lot.

I think it's difficult to get sunset photos that have a genuine atmosphere about them and we've all shot ones with pretty colours that still don't seem to work. To me it seems like the "here is a lovely sunset with something totally uninspiring like a TV aerial just put in for the sake of it" except with a guy on a bike.

Anyway, I seem to be alone with my views as it's obviously popular. Good luck, rad2themax. I'm not having a go at you. I'm just stating my honest opinion. And if you go back to shoot it again could you take a strimmer with you as well as well as a tripod? Wink

Nah Hamish, I'm with you on this one. The focus is right, its just the combination of camera shake and fringing by the looks of it. Noise ruins the sky, too.

Sorry to say, I'm a technical photographer... Basic errors just ruin it for me!

Yer thanks for all the comments everyone, its really appreciated. I dont like all the technical errors in it either, hence why i want to reshoot it and also why i didnt actually submit it in here untill a few other people reccomended i did.

Thanks again fro the critique. It will probably be nearer summer when i next get a chance to reshoot that particular spot as its more of our summer trails spot. The sunsets there are always amazing, its out of the city a bit and quite high up. A perfect place really.

I think i'll run it through a noise reduced i found on another forum i browse. Ill post the link up to it in the main section in a bit. Is an amazing program but can give some photos a kind of unnatural smoothness.

Me too! Smile

However,i f the POWM had to take into account fundamentals of photography such as the entries being properly exposed and focussed then we'd have very few making it through to the vote and it would be a bit dull. Also, I find it really interesting (and amusing) to look at them and see what people vote for. I wonder if the type of bike/trick/clothing trumps the basics required for any other photographic competition Wink

I was secretly disappointed that Adam didn't put this nicely focussed, properly exposed, yet totally Uber-jeyboy XC pic as my entry:

Yer that photo is technically brilliant Smile But like i said- XC discrimination Razz

I think for the next POTM everyone should only be allowed to submit 1 photo only but all photos should get through to the voting. This means everyone gets a chance and can't say their best photo wasn't submitted (not having a go at you or anything Hamish- i've kind of done it do Embarassed).

That then means that if people have a few photos that they cant decide between they can always put them in the photo critique forum for critique and ask people which one they think they should pick- we'll also get more good threads in photo critique that way.

LOL. Cheers rad, that post was a tiny bit tongue in cheek. I totally agree with your suggestion of only 1 photo with all getting through, and about using the photo critique threads more. Still who really cares? After all it's just a bit of fun Wink
