when is it right to start a portfolio site?

i have no idea when i should set up a portfolio site

i know my shots aint that good atm, and they will get better, but doesnt everyone get better and constantly improve?

also, are the free hosting ever worth the while? or are they just too limited...

thnx
Roo

I started one a few months ago, took me about 3 years since starting photography. I've only made a quick one, but at least I can say to someone look on there for phone number/e-mail/sample pics.

One thing to do is if you have a good name, just register it, doesn't matter if you don't put anything on for ages.

I've just registered a domain for mine (watfordphotography.co.uk). It only has a splash screen on it at the minute linking to my other site but i'm creating the site soon.

Sure my photos might not be the best yet but it like web/graphics design aswell so it's just a good thing to do i think. I've also started doing photography for bands at gigs so with aload of thoise on there will hopefully get more and more gig work so i can eventually start charging. At the minute i just get free entry and possily a drink or two which does me great as i would be going to them anyway and paying.

I think you should start a portfolio whenever the hell you like. It's satisfying and makes life easier when people want to see your photos etc and give you a good place to upload them to give people etc. .co.uk domains are only around £5 for 2 years (http://www.ukreg.com has always served me well) and for hosting i'm currently forwarding the domain to a seperate folder on my watfordriders hosting which costs me £30 per year (www.sniffhost.com) but thats for a fairly hefty package. Can certainly get hosting from there for alot cheaper, they're very quick aswell if you do a ping on them.

Same as Roo, I started one after about 3 years with a camera.

It's worth paying for hosting to avoid crappy adverts etc, but remember you don't need much space. My whole site weighs in at about 10Mb including a load of hidden junk and folders, all you need on there is examples of your photos, contact details and maybe a client list.
