UKBikepark

Took a few pics at the local race venue over the weekend. Didn't stay for very long as I had the mrs with me and didn't want her getting too cold and bored, lol.

Nothing too special just a few bog standard race shots - I need to put a bit more thought into the compositions, I think. Once my lights are set up, I tend to stay where I am rather than move around a bit more - I get worried I'll be too slow setting up everything again and missing riders. Trouble is< I end up with a load of pics that all look the same... One day I'll sort my shit out, lol!  Very Happy

Let me know what you hate and what I could do better! Smile

Well it's good that you got out there in the first place! The rider's kit in the first shot really livens it up, though not quite sure whether it's meant to be a blurry action shot or a frozen-in-motion shot? The second shot is quite nice with the tape weaving in and out of the trees, as is the last one - cool pose - though it's fairly similar to the first.

Yeah, I think I was a bit late with my timing on that first one so my flashes only caught his top half but I agree with you about the two pics looking similar - I had a lot like those! Must. Move. Around. More. LOL

I know what you mean - at the second to last race I was at it was raining so I spent most of it under the same tree!

They don't quite work for me. They're not bad shots but they just don't quite do it.

I've always thought that those type of cornering shots only work well if they're close crops and really capture the concentration/panic on the rider's face. Without the clear expression then you need another way of showing the action - the lack of background blur doesn't give any impression of speed and just makes it look static, although they were probably pinning it. Actually I might be a bit harsh with the first comment... I've just had another look and the 3rd pic does seem to be closer and more intense.

And yeah they're a bit samey. But unless you have a willing assistant then you are probably limited in what you can achieve. If you want to shoot events for cash then a single good spot and capturing every rider is a good idea. If you want to make art then you'll need to try all manner of different stuff.

The last pic looks nice and pinned though!

Had this problem when filming a race DVD last year. The only prob was I HAD to try get every rider on tape without it getting too samey....

the second photo is quite good,
but still not good enough to make you feel it is something very special...

i will not say anything more because i do not like write and judge bad photos,
all what i think i keep for myslef,,,
but gently i am telling you that you must try harder,
make your photos interesting, because so far they are simple 'snapshots' for me...

no worries, i/we got the same...
i need to say that i shoot aprox. 50photos and i publish no more than 5...
make your own level very high, always!

ps. to do not get blured rider set your iso minimum - 400

Lunatyk, I agree with you about them being snapshots, but don't hold back - it's good to hear your honest opinions!  Smile
