Two from todayBought a new flash gun and tried it out at Cwmcarn earlier today - bit of a learning curve coming up. The images with the flash weren't that good (its me that's the issue here, not the flash gun).
Anyway, here are 2 from today (without flash)

Cool, good use of panning. Perhaps a slightly slower shutter speed would give a greater sense of speed?
I look forward to seeing a few shots with the new flash!

Ok, you've tempted me to show my flash attempts.
Bought a Canon 580 ex II flash, but haven't quite got the hang of the settings, but I did learn something about my first attempts.
I actually prefer the second one , although its not that sharp - at least there is a sensation of speed.

Nice, I like the camera angle of those. I do like the second better for the same reason as you singletrack, though I like the colours of the rider from the first one more!
BTW, Congrats for winning the shoes on mpora humanoid! [/off topic post]

If you're gonna use flash in daylight then there needs to be a purpose.
Either light filling of shadows (not killing them altogether, like the flash pics you posted)
or rim lighting
or making the rider stand out without over dooing the flash (in which case make sure you underexpose the background a bit - that's my one crtiticism about the flash pics you posted)
Sorry if that seems harsh, but I think lots of people use flash because they think they SHOULD (i.e. the pros do so) rather than learning WHY they should. It's all about lighting - detail & shadows. If you can work out when you don't need flash and when you do then you're onto a winner. Until then there's nothing wrong with experimenting.

I sort of freely admitted that I haven't got to grips with the flash, I need to practice a little more....
Fill in flash was my aim, but I didn't quite get there.
Thanks for the comments, I think I've learnt something from my first attempts though.
