Right place, wrong time of day and only on-board flash

Does anyone else find it frustrating when rides are organised at the wrong time of day for photography? I was out yesterday with the ride kicking off at about 11.30 so that when we got to the more interesting sections the light was a hit high and harsh. I found that a lot of the good bits were pretty much into the sun as well which made the angles more creative, but the main problem, I think was only taking on board flash.

I always pan when I shoot and I think this one suffered as the flash was a bit weak to properly reach the rider:

And this one suffered from flash position with horrible multi-shadows and hot foliage in the foreground:

I think I'll just have to add a bit more weight and take my flash gun from now on as this is getting to be a fairly frequent hassle and have one question:

Roo/Jacob - what do you guys use for remote flash - cables/pocket wizards/commander mode?

Yup especially with frequent grey cloudy days where it's almost inpossible to get decent lighting...

Yer i'd reccomend Ebay Slaves for the price as well Hamish. They may not be the best but there a 10th of the price of pocket wizards or whatever so you can at least try it all out.

Mind you you may have more money for me and pocket wizards would be an awesome investment if you could.

may i enquire as to the difference between pocket wizards and ebay slaves?
Roo

I use cable and ebay slaves, the ebay ones sometimes work fine up to 30ft, other times they barely work at all, bit of an enigma, but I would say worth the £20 odd. Cable is of course 99% reliable, but limited distance and bloody tangles. Here's what I say:

Ebay Slaves:
+ Cheap
+ Wireless
+ Can work well
- Can not work for no reason
- Limited range

Cable:
+ Cheap
+ Reliable
- Limited range
- Be prepared to watch your flash kit bouncing along as a rider catches the cable as he rides/walks past....

PW:
+ Reliable
+ Wireless
+ Good range
- Expensive
- Popular, so you have to make sure no one else at the same place is using your channel.

Commander:
+ Wireless
+ Free if you already have comptable camera and flash
- Expensive if you don't
- Limited range (roughly line of sight)
- On a D70 with an SB600 slave, there is a delay which you have to work around.

I usually end up using the ebay slaves when I'm out, for £20 it's worth a shot.
