Race shotA shot from the weekend at a local race... About the best one I got from the day so not the happiest, lol. Like the lighting but that's about it - this is a crop from something pretty centrally composed but I guess it works ok as a race shot...kinda. I need to shoot more!
Anyways, tell me what you hate about it.

I like the slightly desaturated look and the fact that you can see where he's coming from.

The motion blur definitely spoils it. The motion should be going into the photo, not away from it - even if you miss some of the subject with the flash position. Did you use front sync flash by any chance?

@JAW: Yeah, I'm not sure about that desat look - the ambient was a stop or two under exposed and I'm not sure if that was a bit too much in retrospect. Can't decide if it looks a bit too fakey or not!
@Hamish: I had a couple of flashes on the rider so I don't think that placement was the issue, more the 1/30th shutter speed causing the ghosting. But you're right, it was 1st curtain sync - I need to start saving for some multi maxes so I can get in on the 2nd curtain action

1/30 is way too slow a shutter speed to use front sync, especially when there's half decent ambient light. You'd only get away with using that if it was virtually pitch black and the only light source was the flash.
What camera & triggers are you using? I can get rear sync all the way up to 1/200 with Cactus V2s by using the rear sync setting in camera (D200).

It was a bit slow but I kinda like a bit of blur in there
Canon don't do 2nd curtain unless you use multi maxes (where the PWs create a signal delay) or an on camera flash... Think I read somewhere about Canon not using the central contact in the hotshoe for the 2nd curtain signal whereas the big N, do. It sucks and if I had the money I'd seriously consider moving to Nikon for this reason!
It was actually pretty dark in there - it was foggy, the trees are pretty dense and like I said, I did want a little blur in there.
To give you an idea, this was shot at 1/80, f/6.3 at ISO 200 just after midday, haha.

Can't see the photo.
But that sucks as far as Canons are concerned. So you can't use the in camera flash for rear sync? That really sucks. I often use the in camera flash for fill if I'm riding and can't be bothered taking a flashgun.
I'll have to remember that next time I'm being asked about which DSLRs are good for biking. I'm glad I shoot Nikon.

Sorry I didn't explain clearly - you can use the pop-up flash on 2nd curtain just not off camera ones using 'most' triggers and receivers.

What a miserable day! I think that the desaturated look does work as it emphasises that fact.
