PotM 13: November

Right, the theme of this month is to be lighting. It doesn't matter whether it's natural lighting, or a quality flash (or a combination for that matter) or whatever. If you got a shot where you were rather pleased by the lighting, submit it. Now.

I look forward to seeing some of these!

N.B: Could you please attatch the code of your photo with it when you submit your entry as this will make my life a lot easier when it comes to sorting out the voting.

e.g
Code:

looking forward to seieng his enntry as he does lighting well

I'm so unsure about what to go for this week - soft light in a forest from an overcast day... nice afternoon light with shadows.... but it's completely academic as I never win anyway Wink

Fuck it. I'll just go for the one of Gee from last week's Edinburgh Downtown with flash and background ambient:

its about showing what you saw/captured.not winning surely
Hamish

You're talking like a loser there, jedi Wink

However, I completely agree with you.

I'd rather be a good loser than a big headed winner, eh?

Which is a shame as a lot of your photos are more than worthy of PotM! Anyway, i'm sure you'll win sooner or later so stop appealing to my pity!

Yeah i was thinking that. Lovely shot anyhoo.
Hamish

The guy's head beside the front tyre doesn't help either. It's a very nearly good shot, for sure. Definitely one to return to (with a set of shears or a chainsaw).

The massive head by the front tyre belongs to Jedi! I reckon he popped up deliberately to scupper the shot...
Hamish

Sabotage!!!

Grrr!!! Ban him for life! Wink
jedi

thats it,blame me for your ineptitude :O>

What, for the guys head? Twisted Evil
nolan

reshot this evening. different rider, will upload tomorrow
nolan

I reshot it but I took another one that I like more and is more "lighting" if you know what I mean. I think the golden autumn light is awesome. So this one is my entry.

jedi

ooooh

did you just come?
jedi

i expected a reshot one of above
Hamish

I was going to comment on the whole lighting thing when everybody seemed to be posting silhouettes. I was wondering if you were all being ironic...

Not bad, nolan. It's a bit of a shame that the face is dark from the shadow there. A bit of fill flash could really have helped things out. Nice work though.
nolan

didn't want to use flash as I felt it would have completely spoilt the entire effect of the shot. Ie attempting to capture the gorgeous autumn 'light' which I feel personally it does. Also you'd be able to see that Jedi has his eyes closed! Shocked

Heres the reshot silhouette from chaos the theory roll down:

Flash would only spoil it if it was overdone. You can set use iTTL and set FEV to -2 and it'll fill the shadows a bit but not get rid of them completely (I presume that Canon flash works similarly to Nikon). Fill flash should only fill things a bit and not overpower the image and can really help if it's used properly.

Looks like jedi will have to make that bit more difficult, if he does it with his eyes closed these days Wink

This is from Sleepless in August. I wasn't riding due to a knee injury so I spent the weekend wandering round with the camera instead.

some amazing shots this month guys!
gingerflash otley night ride...................................fecking awesome
Gingerflash

Thanks people. The 2nd was about a 20 second expsoure at probably f/22 or so. Got it first time too. Smile

Mind you, the Otley one was a full second, handheld. You can see movement in the trees, though not the riders. I guess my hands are steadier than an oak! Smile

18-200 VR used then?

That's still pretty good going, even for VR. Although it's a pretty small pic and you can get away with a lot at that size. Also, how did you manage to get the riders to stay perfectly still for a second? They must be pretty keen as my mates never stay still or even vaguely respect my orders. Wink
