Pan BlurHey
I want to start experimenting with pan blur effect (like this: http://www.flowtography.co.uk/a/albums/userpics/10018/_MG_2430.jpg)
but what sorta shutter speeds to you use?
Is it just a stock shutter speed and pan it, or do you need to use a longer shutter speed?
thnx

atfer a load of playing about, I found you use a pretty stock shutter speed and pan it. and a lot of practise gets it right too.

Yeah , mess around with the shutter speed before you take the actual pictures. Slower/faster shutter speeds will black out the image depending on the lighting.

Without flash a shutter speed between 1/60 and 1/500 works depending on how far away the rider is and how fast they are going. With flash it really doesnt matter but between 1/20 and 1/500 is probably about right.

lighting play a big part? or does the flash compensate for the general lighting?

Not quite sure what you mean, but a flash helps loads as the duration of the flash is very quick, often around 1/1000 so it effectively freezes the rider and whatever it hits as if you have used a fast sutter speed while you are actually using a slow one such as 1/60, everything the flash doesn't hit will be blurry.
Like this, the flash ahs hit jimmy and also just caught the closest leaves/branches so it has frozen them, everything else is blurrey, without flash, a shot like that is very, very hard using a shutter speed of around 1/20.
