Off camera / Remote flashWas trying using a remote flash a couple of weeks back and wasn't really happy with the results
Any tips of flash set up - distance to subject, how to mount the flash better (tripod? bungee it to a tree??)

Whatever you need to do to get it higher. Bringing a friend might be the easiest. Do you remember the power settings and exposure you used? Try reduced power settings and a longer shutter speed to let some more ambient in.

The background looks a bit too underexposed. The best rule, as far as I'm aware is to use manual and underexpose the background by 1 stop, then mess around with the flash, taking a few test shots to get the amount right. You can use front sync and really drag the flash - it won't cause the rider to become blurred. The flash is a bit much. There's lots of ways of toning it down - use less power, position it further back, use a narrower aperture, stick on a diffuser... but it's really trial and error.
Bear in mind that my best pic from using manual flash at night didn't get a single POTM vote, so maybe I shouldn't be giving you any suggestions whatsoever!

I know it's a skate forum which is probably even worse then the sin of me being a bmxer (;p) but everyone with any interest in remote flashes have a look at these two threads over on skate perception:
The first is a very extensive thread about what to buy and how to run off cam flash etc: http://forums.skateperception.com/index.php?showtopic=88053
The second is another extensive thread about how to actualyl use off camera flash and includes all the aperure equations and how to meter flashes without a lightmeter etc etc: http://forums.skateperception.com/index.php?showtopic=52674
