an slr gives a lot lot lot more adjustment you can change everything but they are more expensive.
a good compact will cost £250 and a cheap dslr will cost £400
look at the nikon d50 in the dslr side and a canon ixus for the compacts. i have had both and are both brilliant

yeh i agree with jacob, but also, if you looking at compact, the nikon coolpix P1 is considered by the mags (and me cause i have one ) as the best value compact for 250, but its personal opinion.
