Focusing

How do you lot focus on stuff for riding pics, especially with stuff like dirtjumps as theres nothing to prefocus on to. Its really annoyin gettin home and uploading shots to find most are out of focus

To be honest i'm not too sure, i just do it if that makes sence Confused. But a technique you could try to start with is getting someone to stand where the rider will be and pre focus on them. So they could stand on the lip (being careful of the precious jumps of course) and stick a hand out to the middle for you to focus on.

Also depending on your aperture you should be fine to just focus on the back of the take off say, because thats slightly further then the rider will be on the x-axis, but the rider goes higher so has the added y-axis distance to make it about the same.

Just experiment i guess.

I tend to pre-focus even for dirt jumps, although sometimes in an unpredictable situation I'll use dynamic focusing in one particular area of the shot.

Single area AF for me, prefocus then switch to manual to hold it there, fine tuning is often done with my feet. Any kind of jumping from head on with the 200mm 2.8 is a nightmare!
