Flash, is it worth it?

I'm a relative newcomer to DSLR , having only used a Canon G5 for most of my mtb photography.

Since getting the 40D I've become more enthusiastic and can see that some good photography is shot with the use of flash.

Can someone give me an idiots guide to flash photography please?

Would probably go for the Canon 580 EX II, as there would be a better fit with the Canon features, or should I consider something else?

I've only just started to learn a bit myself, so I can't really offer much help, though I am sure there are others here who can.

I can say it is definitely worth it!
