Assignment #2: Scenic/Moody ShotsAssignment #1: Scenic/Moody Shots
for November and December
This is the second assignment, the first went alright, but as the forum grows it'll get better. Your task is to get scenic and/or moody shots but have to be MTB related.
By 'scenic or moody', I mean like when maybe the light in low and warm and you get a real cool feeling in the shot, or a rider riding at sunset/rise, or whatever. But of course interpret the assignment however you like.
Some ideas to get you going:
rider siloetted at sunset
low sun and rider pinning it, real warm colors
dirt jumper with the most awesome style whipping it out at sunset
BE CREATIVE
theres just a few ideas, nothing really amazing there as i didnt really think about them much, its up to you come up with wicked ideas....
some examples I found on the ROAM gallery on their site which give you an idea...

nice assignment, it will be easy to get sunset pictures at this time of the year, its dark at 5. Who one last months? or is there no winer.

I'd argue that simply a sunset or warm colour isn't necessarily moody. If anything it's often a cliche if not done terribly well. There are other alternatives.
Why not also try contrasting a sharp rider with a blurred misty background or using dramatic cloud formations? That can give a much more moody feeling than just a couple of silhouettes at sunset, particularly when combined with a striking composition or using shallow DOF.
Here's one I took a couple of days ago - shame it's just too early for Nov/Dec I'd argue that the sky makes it moody:
And I know you've seen this before but using mist and shallow DOF to blur the backround and contrasted sharp rider can also make things a bit moody, too.
Similar to the above, but contrasting lighting and textures with a different composition can also do that, as suggested in this one you've all seen before
Thought that might give some food for thought so we can avoid simply seeing lots of boring sunset biker photos

you make a fair point, i kinda forgot to bear in mind scenic isn't all sunsets, hehe
yeh i'll try and get some early mornign misty shots as i'm be up digging early over winter.
crazywelshman, theres no winner, since i got photo of the week, i decided this would be good just to see others ideas and perspectives on the assigments,

Nice photo, Al. If I was being critical I'd say I'd prefer a little less foregound but it's still a nice pic.
I haven't been up to much in the way of biking photos recently. I took this one at the weekend to try and get a bit of an Autumnal feel, but it's not terribly moody. It'd have been better when there were leaves on the trail but there's always next year...

Here's an autumn shot. That's me messing around on a drop I came across today, a man who was walking past asked me if I would like him to take a picture for me.

oo nice idea, jw, i'm guessing you didnt you flash right? also, what sorta shutter you use for that?
|
Dob_mike

Yup, I didn't use a flash. I used a 1 second exposure time too.
It was kind of a random idea because we were outside my house and my friend was sitting under a street light.

the street pics are good, just a shame bout the reflectors, but i guess you couldnt really control that, the first two are especially nice.
and the bike ones are good too, bit there's a bit of camera shake and too much flash.
hope thats useful advice

Thanks for tht, I keep tellin him tht his reflectors r gay bt he won't listen - he has a strict mum lol As for the 1s of me (the first 2) I basicly did everything except press the button (because I was riding). I'm just getting into this photography lark nd ur site has been useful help, I'm also only using a bog-standard Kodak Z650.
Cheers again.

Here's one i took in November. I didn't have a tripod hence the high iso/grainyness and also why sunset has kinda lbled into the edges of the silloutte. But i like it all the same.

shame the grain and bad focusing by me on teh last makes it lose imapct, but o well, bit of creative photoshopping for cover could hide it while me claiming i added an effect for the cover like the scan lines or whatever

This was about as scenic/moody as I could do. Sunrise over Woodward West, California. Straight out of the lodge and theres a North Shore course down to the Camp!
