8mp phonesSaw a few companies advertising 8 megapixel camera phones. Does this seem a little silly?
Is it a case of bigger means better or are they actually propperly built?

I reckon it's just for the bragging rights. Mind you, it'd be pretty good if you intend to use it as your main camera, but other wise there's no point.
It's got 2 megapixels more than my DSLR....

It's all bollox and just marketing nonsense to make people believe they're buying a much better camera. We all know that good photos is about way more than MPcount and >6MP is only needed if you're printing huge shots/cropping a lot.
Also, the phones will most likely continue to compress the hell out of any photos taken on the supposedly 8MP sensor. I've a supposedly 5MP camera phone, except the best quality setting gives <900kB jpegs.

Seems to be similar thoughts then
There seems to be a race about makings bigger and 'better' as opposed to making existing technology more reliable.

Cramming that many pixels onto such a small sensor is just foolish.
The closer they are together, the more they interfere with each other. That's when you get more noise and softer edges.
