Just wondering but can you do time-laspe shots with entry level DSLRs like the D50?
just wondering cause i love time laspes, dun a few with a video camera, but it eats battery, and want to do them properly with a still camera.
thnx

By time lapse, do you mean long exposure time? Or the multi frame shots showing progression throughout the frames?
If you're talking about long exposure, go into priority shutter speed mode, and make the shutter speed around 25" to start. |

Oh I know what your talking about.
You need a high speed camera for that. You basically just mount it somewhere and hit record, and it will record untill you hit stop. And then you replay it , and you can see the whole days events in the segment length that you choose.
Hope that helps...? _________________ 02' Specialized P1 Frame

You don't.
You set the camera to the exposure time wanted, hit the button and walk away. After the time period that you chose is up, the lens will close again , and you can veiw the picture. _________________ 02' Specialized P1 Frame

Yeah , if you have to hold the button down, you can move the camera which will blur the light movements, even if it is on a tripod. _________________ 02' Specialized P1 Frame

To do a time lapse like you describe, you need to set the camera to take many photos (not a long exposure) at set intervals so you can then put each frame together as a short video.
I don't know about the D50, but with my D70 you can use Nikon Capture 4 Software to record time lapse images at intervals of your choice directly to hard-drive rather than memory card.
For all-day shooting I'd recommend intervals of about 30-60 seconds between each photo, and set the camera to a mode that measures exposure automatically as it is liable to change throughout the day.
I've found a link to the software being used in a test for the D2H, but it can be used with many other Nikon cameras. Make sure the cameras USB mode is set to PTP too. Hope that helps! |

When is it due to arrive?
I've been wanting to do some time lapse stuff too, with winter coming in I might try some as shorter days would be easier to work with given battery life etc...
Actually I just remembered something I've been meaning to try, a time lapse of a whole day looking at Spinnaker Tower. We'll see. |
