It deserved to win as it was the best photo IMO. It's very well timed and nicely composed but...
It's spoiled by too much flash again. The shadows are short which makes me think this was taken at not a good time for photography, with the sun slightly behind the rider so Jacob needed to use flash. The problem is that there's too much making the rider look horribly unnatural. The skin tones on the flesh look completely unrealistic and the light doesn't look balanced at all.
Also, it looks a bit static. I'm sure the guy was gunning it but there's no impression of speed. It almost looks as if the dust could have been photoshopped in to give the impression that he was moving. A bit of motion blur would also have helped.
It's still a decent shot though. _________________ Hamish |

Considering the rider has a number plate on his bike, it might well have been a race run. i.e jacob probably couldn't say "postpone the race a few hours everybody, the lighting's crap" - he prob had to make the most of what was there at the time. _________________

I know the dust wasn't photoshopped - I was meaning that it almost looked a little out of place. And I wasn't having a go at him for shooting at the wrong time of day, just pointing out some of the technical difficulties he was facing, as becomes apparent when you read the whole sentence. It's a really annoying part of MTB photography that most rides tend to happen around midday and you have to fight the light rather than use it to your advantage. _________________ Hamish |

True, true. Mind you he was lucky for the sunny day he got! I agree with you about the flash too.
