Looking at getting one, but in 72mm size they seem to be fecking expensive. I am aware that buying cheap filters is most probably false economy, but is there a midpoint anywhere with relatively cheap filters but don't perform that much worse than the expensive (£50+) ones?
How about this Hoya one?
Thanks, Sam.

Although they're even more expensive, it actually makes more sense to buy a decent polarising filter in a 77mm size. If you ever upgrade to "pro" quality lenses like Nikon's f2.8 zooms or Canon's L series then you'll probably notice that they're virtually all 77mm. If you use any smaller lenses meantime then you can just get a step up ring for the smaller lens. They only cost a few quid.
