I managed to get a few pics on today's ride before mauling myself in a pretty sore crash. I tried out my new lens, the Tamron 17-50 f2.8, which works pretty well, particularly with regard to chromatic abberation. Anyway, enough of the technobabble, here are some pics:

It's his daughter's bike, Mike. We didn't steal a child's bike purely for the sake of a photo
I also can't get over that guy trying an X-up off that drop. You really don't get that much airtime as it's pretty small. Kudos for trying and the facial expression as he realises how sketchy it is makes it for me.
Cheers BTW. I've still to give this lens a bit more of a test but I'm well impressed so far. I'd have loved a Nikor 17-55 DX if it were half the size, weight and price but this seems to be an absolute bargain. If anyone's looking for a great kit lens or a fast, general purpose zoom then this is pretty darn good, even if it is "only" f2.8 throughout. _________________ Hamish |

| Very nice as usual, would be better if the whole bike and body was sharp, i feel. |

Cheers, Duncan. Yeah, lots of sharp stuff is good, although I do like a bit of movement blur apart from the face. I'd set up for a usual panning shot but I didn't expect anyone to try an X-up of that drop. It's really quite a small drop and usually people just launch of it without too much style. If I'd known he was going to attempt it I'd have picked a faster shutter speed than 1/250. That guy's a nutter for trying it and he almost crashed into me with his sketchy landing. Fair play though. Still the face is really sharp and that's what matters to me in the first one.
The second could be a little sharper but it's a sacrifice for background blur which wouldn't convey as much speed.
The third one rocks though!!! _________________ Hamish |

I can't think of a single zoom lens with an aperture larger than f/2.8... Only prime lenses!
I know what you mean with the 17-55 Nikkor DX lens, especially when having to use it for a whole day at a time the weight gets a bit much. However I found that the setup I was using that day (D2X, 17-55 f/2.8 and SB-800) didn't weigh as much as some guys setup I met last weekend... 20D + Battery Grip, 24-70 f/2.8 and 420EX speedlight seemed to weigh a ton! |

Really like the first one, the colours of the bike really make the shot great imo.

I used to think that about x ups too. They get veeeery easy with a bit of practice, I do em off kerbs on the way to college _________________ "I have nothing to declare, except my genius." |

Yeah. I don't think there are any zooms bigger than 2.8. I meant that it shall be replacing my 50 f1.8 from now on unless it's really overcast.
Regarding the weight - remember that I'm an XCer and I always ride when I take pics. I'd rather not stick a D200, 17-55 and SB-600 in my CamelBak, never mind what you took. I'm well aware it won't seem that heavy with an Optech strap but I'd notice the extra weight on the climbs for sure.
