K been throwing my toys out the pram so time to put myself up for judgement

YESSSS i cut 2" of his head.. but these guys were going by at 30mph clearing a 30ft gap...

granted the location is crappy but i have not changed the images these are the RAW originals and i could crop the image easy...

anyways both taken with D50 @ 1/80 on a 50mm f1.8 iso 400 (WB set to cloudy) as it was dusk..

i have the RAW file to bring up and work on so this is the base original...

30ft gap? Time for a wider lens... The crop means they could be doing anything, need more of the scene in shot.

not been cropped mike. the jump / gap was boring i wanted to get a sharp, mid air shot, you don't (IMO) need to see the jump, it kinda adds an air of "WTF" to the shot (wondering how they got up so high)

Test shot

nice panning, but im sorry to say they dont do much for me

mainly cause it just looks like they could be going 5ft off the ground, and you cant see anyting but the rider in the pic, i think you should either show the surroundings and the jump, or crop in way tighter

also, not your fault but the background looks dull and murky, though you cant brighten the forest hehe

p.s. tell the first guy not to wear all black Wink loving the color of the frame, but the blakcness is a turnoff

hope i helped (yeh i always get uber picky when the shots isnt myn hehe)

"Crop" doesn't necessarily mean you've cut the image down, it merely refers to the angle of view. Wider lens needed like I said.

Yeah, but it's always good to practice your panning technique with some close-ups, and it is nice to see close-ups every now and then. And endless series of distant riders with the jumps in gets a bit tedious (see most POTM entries Wink)

I personally like this one from the series, Foz. It's a nice angle and a different pose, if only he wasn't wearing such dull colours with a dark bike:

A tiny contrast USM wouldn't hurt to make the rider 'pop' and bring out some colour from the background. Or using Capture NX instead of ACR with my own secret MTB settings...

You got the focusing right, so I think practicing playing with composition would be really good for you. Think about how you want to photo to look and how you want to go about doing it, rather than just pointing and clicking. Look foward to seeing more of your stuff. x

Thanks Hamish and Sassy.

Hamish i think i took it in the plainer colour mode, i didn't touch them in PS.. just moved them across.. i'm sure the tweak script would help...

sassy is that more what other people want? i wanted a nice tight focus .. tracking the rider.
