Here are a few shots I took yesterday at Kirroughtree, before the snow and the fecking cold got a bit much. They're all taken with the Nikkor 10.5mm fisheye, although a couple have had a little cropping.

and yes, that is my bike in the third pic Wink

Great as usual. Some awesome facial expressions going on there!

Shame about the white skies though, i know it cant really be helped but just always manages to take my eyes of the action. Also in some pictures it's kinda bled into the trees if i'm being real picky. The last picture has a slightly better sky though, still grey obviously but just not quite so white and bright. Could these bright skies be rectified by more flash but then exposing less so the foregrounds were still the same but the skies would be darker?

Love the fisheye effect though. I also like how, being shots in natural terrain, there's no straight lines so the fisheye isn't quite so noticable but still brings the rider out and jus generally adds to the impact of it.

EDIT: Oh and Dan cheap 0.45X lenses that go onto 37mm video cameras can be found on ebay. Just search 37mm wide angle or something similair. These are generally known as 'semi fisheye though. A proper fisheye will be 0.3X usually. These are alot harder to find without shelling out alot of cash for baby deaths and such but raynox do a Clip On 0.3X that will fit. I have no experience with clip on though as my 0.45X is screw on but should be ok. If it's not great you've only wasted a tenner. Smile

LOL. Stu's facial expressions are always ace. Cheers.

The blown skies are annoying but couldn't be helped in those lighting conditions. It's possible to expose for the skies and use flash for the subject, but that's not really an option in those shots. You'd end up with the foreground and rider being really underexposed and you'd need the hell of a powerful flash to light up a forest or a section of hillside. The fisheye takes in approx 180 degree angle of view so, unless you're up close, you'd need a section of floodlighting from your local footie ground.

I think part of the bleeding into the trees is due to the fact I panned to keep the rider sharp and the chromatic abberation, which happens with this lens in high contrast situations, makes it more noticeable.

I guess I could always replace the skies using photoshop but I really can't be arsed. I'll have a beer and see if I feel like it later.

HAH!

I used flash in all of those pics (see above for an explanation of the reasons why the skies are blown and more flash wouldn't have helped in those circumstances). The reason why it doesn't look like flash was used is because I metered for the ambient light first, and then added flash. That way I was able to get away with a fairly slow shutter speed and panning (approx 1/125) and it's a nice fairly balanced effect.

Kirroughtree is a fantastic trail but is almost 3hrs drive from my house. Sad
I still have some other great trails nearer to me though.

I really like the last but the others don't do anything for me. How do you get on with the fisheye?

Cheers, Roo. I much prefer the last one as well. The others were a bit of experimenting but it doesn't really work for XC pics other than real close ups. I have to say that I'm still finding my feet with it. I'm still not sure about the sharpness wide open, the CA in high contrast sitautions is pretty annoying, but indoor flash converage with ext flash & wide panel is pretty much perfect. I might try and stick to using f3.5 or 4 as a minimum and save it for better lighting conditions, but it's a lot of fun.

How have you found it?

I've found it quite bad for that as well, I tend to use it at f4 or higher anyway just to help with sharpness a bit.

I've only taken it out on one nice sunny day so, for the rest of the time, I've been stuck at wide apertures unless I get into the realms of ISO 3200! I don't know about having to stop it down too far - f4 is pretty darn sharp:

f4 1/500 ISO 100

I think you can get them from Jessops. Just go into your local with your camera and ask. We got a wide angle lens (0.7 I think) for around £40 from them.
