I don't know if you can help but i'd like some opinions on a bit of a dilemma i'm having.

Basically, for a career i'd like to be a  photographer/journalist for a magazine such as digital photo or Dirt magazine (probably a freelance journo/photogragher) and i'm not sure whether i should take a uni or college course in journalism or photography.

The things about photography are that i love photography, and am greatly enthuasiastic about it and would be happy to shoot almost any genre, but am not sure about how possible/easy it is to making a living from it. Journalism seems more stable but yet also more boring, if you get what i mean. Ideally i'd like to write articles and do the photography for magazine articles.

Also bear in mind that some journalism courses cover a bit of photography and vice versa.

Any advice and thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

I'd have thought journalism would be the safer/more sensible option.

I'm not sure how it works over there, but here in the states,  one could major in literature, but somehow end up working in IT. Another could go to school for IT and end up flipping burgers while the literature major is doing what the other guy was educated to do. Strange how that works...

I will say what I love about photography is it's easy to cut through all the bullshit. Your work should speak for it self, so you need to make certain it speaks highly of you. It's one of the few professions  that has the possibility of being lucrative without a formal education photography. The catch is you have to be a good photographer and a good salesman. I'm a poor salesman Sad

It's a tough call...

Cheers for your help guys! I'm still doing more research into it. I know roehampton university do Journalism and one of the modules is photography so that could be an option. Another would be to do a degree in journalism and then once finished do a part time/home study course in photography.
