There are quite a few to choose from, but wondered which brand was best supported regarding accessories/lenses etc in the UK?

In which way, availability or support/warranty?
Both Canon and Nikon are bound to be the best, Ive no experience with Nikon but Canon you can get anywhere. _________________ MTB-Addict

| As above, I'd just stick with Nikon or Canon. Nikon UK is based 1/2 hour up the road from me (I think Canon is similar distance) which is quite handy, if I have a problem I can just drive up. |

Both Nikon & Canon have their own advantages and relative disadvantages, although you'd really not go wrong with either. Both make very good lenses and good camera bodies and although Nikon's flash system is regarded as being better it's not like Canon's is bad.
Have a play around with models from both though as they do feel a bit different and have different layouts/menus. Lower range Canons tend to be tiny and might not suit as well if you've big hands. _________________ Hamish |

Service reception is now shut down at Nikon, so you won't be able to speak to the experts unless you are a pro support member. |

Both the 400d and D40 are silly 'compact' size SLRs which basically means your hand won't fit all on the grip I find unless you're a small man or woman or a kid...I found it really kills the side of your hand when using it especially in portrait.
Though I believe Nikon use more metal parts in the assembly of their bodies at lower ranges, at least they did with the D50 which was and still is a better camera than the D40/x. _________________ MTB-Addict

Yeah. Forgot about the D40... When I was looking at an entry DSLR it was between the 350D and the D50. No contest - D50 was a much nicer feel whereas the 350D was tiny and horrible. I suppose the D40 and 400D are quite similarly wee.
However, the ergonomics on the D200/300 seem a good bit more fitting to my manly hands than the 30D/40D. But it really is a personal thing. _________________ Hamish |

Haven't had a play with the D300/200 purely because now I've got the kit I'm sticking to Canon, plus compared to the lower models my 400d was preferred. Now I've got a 40d its much nicer to hold and the weight I actually like, its a much much more solid camera and to be honest, its not much more than a 450d now. _________________ MTB-Addict
