Here are a couple of shots from a slightly dark, overcast ride at Innerleithen's XC trail today. I decided to take out the 50mm f1.8 but discovered that it's a bit too telephoto for there. Still, it keeps things a bit different:

I really like the first to but on the third one- like you said the lense was too telephoto. I can't really stand shots with no ground in (except in a few special circumstances) and the way the background viewer is chopped in half aswell.
First to are awesome though , _________________ www.watfordriders.co.uk |

I don't have a problem at all with no jump in the photo, as it's sometimes nice to leave things to the imagination. In fact I dislike it when the jump is in the photo purely for the sake of it.
I'd have rather taken the third photo more from the right, to try and catch Gary's effort (or actually lack of it) but couldn't because of trees in the way. That was what I was really meaning about the nuisance of a mild telephoto lens. I'd rather have used a slightly wider lens but would probably have still left the jump out of it.
Here's an experimental one, also from yesterday, that I'd be interested to hear your views on. I'm not sure about it myself, but at least it shows the jump

| That's a wierd one, black blacks and white whites so the contrast is good, but the majority of the picture is a fairly flat grey. Can't decide if I like it or not??? |

Yer fair enough, each to there own and all that. I just prefer a tighter or wider crop really.
I like that new one but at the same time i like to see riders faces so i'm not too sure on it.
Also it seems unnatural to my eye to have the rider further towards the side hes going to if you get me. But while it seems unnatural i also like it becuase it's differeny. Just a photo im at halves on overall really _________________ www.watfordriders.co.uk |

in reference to the latest pic you submitted:
loving the composition, looks oriignal, not sure why though
also, i like how the rider is nice of contrasted against bg so stands out, but again the bg is quite flat, though if that was onctrasty the rider wouldnt pop out, so i dunno
nice one _________________ Ride like you have insurance.

I was trying to do something different. My theory was to show him disappearing off into the distance, so I left more to show where he'd come from and a hint of where he was going. Hence the unusual rider placement and the attempt to have the step-up going diagonally from left to right. It was a bit spur of the moment though.
I agree with rad about normally liking to see the rider's faces (or the faces of people watching the rider if the rider's isn't visible) which is probably why I'm still a bit unsure on it. I think if someone was watching from the left side it would help things. I also agree with Roo about the B&W conversion having a bit much textureless grey, despite the contrast being okay. Here's the colour for reference, which I think I prefer:
I guess it might be a better one to try in spring when the trees have some colour and with someone at the left side watching. _________________ Hamish |

Im definately more of a fan of the colour one Hamish And i see where your coming from with the rider placement- i'm not nessesarily saying it looks unnatural in a bad way, more of a just makes me look at it again and think somethings out of place kinda thing. _________________ www.watfordriders.co.uk |
