I took this shot a couple of weeks ago and it's taken me a while to get around to it. I originally shot it to try HDR (blending differently exposed images) but I couldn't quite get the colours right in the end result. In the end I took the easy way out and just converted it to B&W. Whaddy reckon?

For reference, here's the colour version, which still doesn't look quote right IMO

I like both, but your right the B&W is better.

Did you shoot in RAW to try the HDR?

I think you made a good decision converting it. It definitely looks better that way, than what it was before.

P.S Good idea to include the original as well, it really helps us to see the change. I think everyone should do that when submitting an edited photo.

Cheers. I did use a single RAW file to make differently exposed JPEGs, penfold, so it's really pseudoHDRrather than true HDR.

BTW - I've managed to sort the colours a bit. Looks much better now:

I do like the HDR, better than the original. Doesn't really pop out at ya does it?

Hmm.... I don't know about everyone else, but these days I often don't need to adjust much other than levels/USM when converting RAW files, so there'd be little point unless it was a heavily edited photo. But it is a good idea when there's been a lot of editing performed.

I still think a photoshop/RAW conversion challenge/POTM is a good idea. I'll happily submit a RAW file and a JPEG of the same RAW file with bland in camera settings for everyone to play with. Everyone could post their finished pictures with a description of what adjustments they did and what software they used.

It'd surely be good to see the different results that experienced photoshoppers can get from the same photo. It'd be useful for beginners to have a play and compare their efforts. And it'd also be good for the "it's not a proper photo if it's been edited" philistines to see what they are missing out on Wink

Yes we might have to do that at some point actually. Could be some interesting results!
